Buying used / CANADIAN EV FIELD GUIDE

How do I check a used EV’s battery health?

What to request from a seller, what a health percentage means and what it cannot prove.

Reviewed September 26, 2026
THE SHORT ANSWER

Ask for documented battery evidence tied to this VIN, plus an independent inspection. A dashboard range estimate on its own is not a standardized capacity test or a guarantee of future battery life.

01

Ask how the number was obtained.

Request the test date, odometer, tool or manufacturer procedure, measured result and any limitations. State of health is a comparison with a reference condition, but methods and availability differ. Do not assume two brands’ percentages are directly comparable.

02

Separate health from the range display.

Displayed range can depend on the car’s calculation and operating conditions. Tesla, for example, documents a dedicated battery-health test for supported vehicles. That does not mean every used EV supports the same test. Ask a qualified service provider what evidence is available for the exact model.

03

Inspect the rest of the charging system.

Have a qualified EV shop inspect the underbody and battery enclosure, check diagnostic faults and test the fitted AC and DC charging. Obtain paperwork for any battery repair or replacement. A replacement pack does not automatically reset every warranty.
