Buying used / CANADIAN EV FIELD GUIDE

Do used EVs qualify for Canadian rebates?

Check the program, province and transaction before including an incentive in your budget.

Reviewed September 26, 2026
THE SHORT ANSWER

Do not subtract a new-vehicle rebate from a used listing automatically. Federal, provincial, territorial and charger programs have different conditions. Verify eligibility for your exact purchase with the program administrator.

01

Start with official program pages.

Canada’s federal EVAP describes support for eligible new vehicles. The federal incentives directory also links provincial and territorial programs, some of which support used vehicles or home charging. Availability, funding and deadlines can change; an old discussion or dealer advertisement is not approval.

02

Ask which transaction qualifies.

Confirm residency, seller requirements, model year, vehicle price, prior registration, purchase date and whether this VIN has already received support. If you are buying across provincial borders, ask the administrator to confirm how those facts affect your application.

03

Keep the comparison honest.

Request a written quote showing vehicle price, taxes, fees, financing and each claimed incentive separately. Confirm who applies, when payment occurs and what happens if the application is declined. Until verified, compare the used car at its price before rebates.
