Buying used / CANADIAN EV FIELD GUIDE

Do the apps, keys and paid features transfer with a used EV?

Verify connected services, software entitlements, physical keys and the first charging stop before handover.

Reviewed September 26, 2026
THE SHORT ANSWER

Do not assume that every feature shown in an advertisement becomes yours. Installed hardware, an active subscription, a trial and a transferable purchased feature are different things. The rules depend on the manufacturer, feature and sale.

01

Is the advertised feature actually included?

Ask the seller to show current entitlements and expiry dates, and put included features in writing. Confirm transfer terms with the manufacturer. Do not value a car based only on a hardware label or a promise of future software. Driver-assistance equipment also does not remove the driver’s responsibilities.

02

Who controls the vehicle after the sale?

Arrange the manufacturer’s ownership-transfer process, remove the previous owner’s access and confirm your own app access. Being added as a driver may not make you the account owner. Tesla’s published process illustrates this distinction and warns that some upgrades and subscriptions may not transfer; other brands have their own requirements.

03

Can I drive and charge before the transfer finishes?

Confirm which physical keys or cards are supplied, test them and learn the documented backup access method. Ask whether account processing affects connected charging or other services. Plan a compatible first-day charging option, verify included cables and approved adapters, and obtain the applicable warranty and any promised repair records.
