Winter & travel / CANADIAN EV FIELD GUIDE

How much range will I lose in a Canadian winter?

Separate official range, winter scenarios and the kilometres you actually need.

Reviewed September 26, 2026
THE SHORT ANSWER

There is no single winter percentage for every EV. Temperature, speed, heating, tires, road conditions and the exact vehicle all affect the result. Test your hardest routine, not just an annual average.

01

Use tests as context, not a guarantee.

CAA’s 2025 winter road test found range reductions of 14–39% compared with official ratings for the vehicles tested. A different used car, colder day or faster highway journey can perform differently. Owner stories are useful prompts for questions, not a replacement for comparable testing.

02

Keep a usable charge window.

A 400 km rating does not mean 400 km between every charging stop. Your departure limit, arrival reserve, battery condition and weather reduce the distance available. Electric Explorer shows its planning allowances explicitly so you can compare scenarios.

03

Verify the winter features.

Ask whether this exact trim has a heat pump and battery preconditioning for fast charging. Cabin preheating and warming a battery before a charging stop serve different purposes. Follow the vehicle manual; a heat pump is not a promise of a particular winter range.
