Ownership / CANADIAN EV FIELD GUIDE

Will an EV actually save me money?

Compare your electricity mix, gasoline use, insurance and upfront costs in Canadian dollars.

Reviewed September 26, 2026
THE SHORT ANSWER

Compare the specific cars and your charging routine. Cheap home charging can make a very different calculation from frequent public fast charging. A fuel saving does not necessarily outweigh a higher purchase price or insurance premium.

01

Use prices you can actually pay.

Enter your utility’s incremental electricity cost, including applicable delivery charges and tax, at the times you charge. Add public charging separately. Use a blended effective rate for time-billed sessions and include parking or membership fees. All calculator defaults are examples, not current Canadian tariffs.

02

Compare like for like.

Use the same annual distance and realistic efficiency for both cars. Our tool starts with battery-side consumption and adds a charging-loss allowance. If your consumption figure already includes charging losses, set efficiency to 100% to avoid counting them twice.

03

Finish the ownership budget.

Get insurance quotes for the exact vehicles and coverage. Separately compare purchase price, tax, financing, depreciation, installation, tires, maintenance and repairs. The tool calculates an energy comparison with selected adjustments, not a full total-cost-of-ownership forecast.
