Charging / CANADIAN EV FIELD GUIDE

Will a regular outlet keep up with my commute?

Level 1 vs. Level 2, overnight recovery and the installation questions to ask.

Reviewed September 26, 2026
THE SHORT ANSWER

Start with the energy you need to replace each day. A large battery does not automatically require a powerful home charger, but a long daily drive or short parking window can.

01

Power is a rate. Energy is an amount.

kW describes how quickly energy flows; kWh describes how much you use. Level 1 uses a 120 V supply. Level 2 uses 240 V. The available circuit, charging equipment and vehicle’s onboard AC charger limit actual power.

02

Replace the commute, then test a harder day.

Use the calculator with your total daily kilometres, parking hours and battery-side consumption. Increase consumption for a winter scenario. Its efficiency allowance is editable; severe cold, battery heating and shared charging can reduce recovery further.

03

Get the installation assessed first.

Ask a licensed electrical contractor about capacity, cable route, outdoor equipment, permits and load management before assuming you need a service upgrade. Confirm outlet suitability and manufacturer instructions. Do not improvise with an unapproved extension cord.
